Over the next few years, Newcastle’s skyline could see a number of changes.
Here’s what we know so far…
Let’s start with the biggest, what could soon be Newcastle’s tallest building.
What’s Being Planned in Newcastle Development
The Gainford Group are planning a 37-storey tower on the site of the former Premier Inn on New Bridge Street, at the edge of the city centre, that would include a hotel, apartments, bars, and restaurants.
This could be the new hit place to go for a few drinks while you’re staying in the city. With Newcastle already known for being one of the best places for a night out, could this make it even better?
Malmo Land
Next, although the plans for Malmo Quay in Ouseburn cause outrage previously, it is said that these plans for 13 townhouses and two duplex apartments on the disused Malmo land, plus up to 73 homes in a set of buildings up to eight storeys tall on neighbouring Spillers Quay are currently in the redesign.
Whey Aye Wheel
Now another one with a bit of controversy, just down the river from the Malmo development, is the site of the Whey Aye wheel. The 460ft observation wheel would be the tallest in Europe and is part of a wider ‘Giants on the Quayside’ complex that will also include a virtual golf club and a family entertainment centre.
However, there is still no sign of building work starting – almost three years since city councillors agreed to grant planning permission for the scheme after being set back due to the Covid Pandemic and ongoing war in Ukraine.
Gateshead Quayside
Alongside the Whey Aye, one of the most significant developments across the North East will be the new arena being built on the Gateshead Quayside. As well as the 12,500-capacity arena, it will boast a conference centre and a hotel – plus new bars, restaurants, public space, and walkways along the Quayside.
Quayside West
On the flip side, however, next to the current Utilita arena, there are already plans approved to build 1,100 new homes. The £250m Quayside West project will feature a number of housing blocks up to 12 storeys tall, a 135-bed hotel, and shops.
There are also plans on going for the regeneration of Pilgrim Stree in the City Centre, where HMRC are creating a huge office centre where they will be moving 9000 jobs over to.
Strawberry Place
Another major development coming to the city centre, one clouded with a lot more uncertainty, is development along Strawberry Place next to St James’ Park with new blocks of flats, offices, and a hotel – something that proved very unpopular with Newcastle fans when it was approved in 2019. But we are still yet to see any progress with this as the group in charge of the development is said to be going into administration. Good news for the Newcastle fans, I guess!
