What’s So Special About Staycations In Those Places

From countryside landscapes and quaint villages to cities doused in history, the UK offers fabulous spots for staycations, saving you both the time and money spent on international travel.
In fact, the hidden gems of this country simply can’t be found abroad – and that’s what makes them extra special. We’ve rounded up 5 of the most unmissable destinations so that you can start planning your well-earned staycations for 2022.

DORSET – UK Staycation

Home of the iconic Jurassic Coast. Dorset boasts a dramatic coastline and serves as nature’s own “gallery” with breathtaking arches, stacks and coves.

Your very own “Jurassic Park” could meet you with beaches sprinkled with fossils, or you could explore the history of the world-famous novel and poet Thomas Hardy (who loved setting his stories on open heaths and vales). The county is also known for its Bronze Age burial grounds and castle ruins for those who really want to journey back into history.

The beauty of Dorset is that it serves a little magic for everyone. Ideal for romantic getaways (a trip to Durdle Door, perhaps?), as well as more activity-led family holidays, thanks to the popular towns of Weymouth and Bournemouth.
If you enjoy water sports and fishing, then Poole in Dorset is an excellent choice, too. Many describe it as the best beach in Britain, and with a kilometre of soft golden sand at its coast, who could possibly disagree?

MERSEYSIDE – UK Staycation

Merseyside UK Garden view - staycations

Most famous for Cavern Walks, where The Beatles first became famous (do check out The Beatles Story Experience, if you’re a fan) – but there’s a lot more to Merseyside than its principal city of Liverpool.
Merseyside is also home to The World of Glass Museum in St.Helens, which is a gorgeous town known for its rugby league heritage.

For families, a drive-through Knowsley Safari Park is always a good idea, where you’ll see cheeky baboons and a pride of lions up close. Then there’s also Crosby Beach, which is now the permanent home of “Another Place” (the famous sculpture by Anthony Gormley).

If you’re on a budget, Merseyside is packed with art galleries and museums – that are either free or cheap to enter (we highly recommend Merseyside Maritime Museum), as well as Comedy Clubs or trips to The Plaza.

Architectural magnificence can be found among Merseyside’s many ancient Cathedrals and listed buildings, ideal for short city breaks (with ample coffee).

DERBYSHIRE – UK Staycation

British Travel award-winning holiday destination (2018), Derbyshire is filled with bustling towns, picturesque villages and pretty cottages made from stone.
But stripped back, this destination is actually a place of contrasts as it’s home to the world-famous Peak District, as well as northernmost towns that are the same latitude as cities like Liverpool and Manchester.

Beyond its obvious gems, such as Peak District National Park (we recommend Dovedale, Lathkill Dale and the White Peak and Dark Peak), there is also the popular Chatsworth House – a must if you’re a Jane Austen fan and one of the world’s first factories (as per the Industrial Revolution).
Commonly referred to as a place of “Enlightenment”, Derbyshire has carried many of England’s industries through the 18th Century and is well worth a visit.

TYNE AND WEAR – UK Staycation

TYNE AND WEAR  UK - staycations

For cosmopolitan Newcastle, Gateshead museums, and galleries that serve a dose of Roman history, the northeast country of Tyne and Wear is brimming with things to do and fantastic tourist spots.

This destination is famous for its quayside cities and many sandy Northeast beaches for you to enjoy some of the English sunshine. If you love good surf, then book your stay near Tynemouth Longsands  (which is particularly lively during the summer).

Sunderland is exceptional for shiny shopping malls and landscaped Victorian parks (not forgetting football). Remember to stop by Washington to visit the Wetlands –  a stunning nature conservation area located near the River Wear.

What’s mostly associated with just Newcastle city and “Geordie culture” is also quite the historical revelation.  As such, Tyne and Wear offer ideal getaways for party-goers, history lovers, and beach strollers alike.

Welcome to the birthplace of Captain Cook – the famous Captain Cook Birthplace Museum tells the story of one of the world’s greatest navigators and mariners through themed display galleries and exhibitions.
Middlesbrough is full of exciting places like these to visit while on staycation, offering a healthy mix of the arts, natural landscapes and nightclubs and entertainment.

If you’re holidaying with children, they will love Newham Grange Farm and even the seaside town of Redcar (with a gorgeous beach). The county is also home to the famous Tees Transporter Bridge, a number of stadiums, and of course, Ormesby Hall – that’s just steeped in history.

This wider-known capital of the Tees Valley has been claimed to be one of the most up-and-coming staycation spots in the UK, so we recommend that you pay it a visit (before it gets too busy!).
